Into my Write Mind
Welcome to the blog for the development of my, that is, J. R. DuBois's epic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Liren. My name is Jessica, and I am delighted you are here.
The Chronicles of Liren has been in the works for eight or more years (since 2012...ish), and has since grown from the whimsical pantsing of a would-be novelist into the complicated, detailed, convoluted epic that it has become and is still becoming. They liken to the style and length of Tolkien, Jordan, Rothfuss, Sanderson, Rowling, and even Gabaldon (though not QUITE that lengthy).
Currently, the saga is expected to be told within three volumes, perhaps four -- that is, of course, unless the characters, now fully-fleshed and well into their own right minds, carry it elsewhere, my own intentions be damned. This year, 2020, while detrimental to many, opened the doors for my creative Muse to build the world Liren has become.
I started with the intention of writing one volume, and have, to my utter surprise and pleasure, written two. Glorious as this is, it has its own challenges. Following the conclusion of this second volume -- the story of which is by no means complete -- the next step is not to parade right into volume three, but to pump the breaks and begin polishing these first two volumes so that volume three -- and maybe four -- can be as neatly wrapped as possible.
What better time to initiate a blog to document the process and invite you fine people to join me along the way?
As for what I intend to share within this blog with you, my (hopefully) future fan-base and readership, is merely the process. Posts may not be as polished or as explanatory as this one. They certainly will not reflect my writing style, for my style within the realm of story-telling is quite different than my style on a blog or any other "social media" forum. They may be full of monologues, or steady streams-of-consciousness as I relay my thoughts on the editing and polishing process of these first two volumes and begin the third. They may house some language better suited for those of a mature audience (for my books are certainly NOT for young adults or children). They may even be short, frumpy anecdotes during days my Muse refuses to talk to me. The possibilities are endless, but I will do my best to be transparent and, I hope, entertaining.
Simply put: you will have here, within this blog, a glimpse of the mind of me, Jessica (or Jess), writing as J. R. DuBois, author of the up-and-coming epic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Liren (which, by the way, only just now received its name, in a desire to create this here blog). If this blog post is any indication of what to expect from my novels, they are not short, and while a large goal of mine during the editing process will be to eliminate as much fluff and superfluous descriptors and scenes as possible, they will still invariably be... not short.
Finally, my priority IS to my novels, and not to this blog. I will make it a goal to share the process as frequently as I am able, but the last thing this budding author needs is to be distracted from writing by a blog about writing. For a writer is only a writer when one, well, writes.
So again, welcome to the blog, to the insights into the development of The Chronicles of Liren and all the mess that it may entail. Buckle in, soldiers, because there is no way tackling this beast will be anything short of a wild ride (and yes, I'm aware of the cliché; and yes, I do try quite seriously to avoid them in the volumes themselves).
Indubitably yours,
J. R. DuBois, author
